SITM Sweet 16: Breaking down Michigan State’s national tournament R32 win over Virginia

Sports in the Mitten is powered

Tom Izzo and Michigan State keep dancing and are off to the Sweet 16 after beating Virginia 60-54 during the Round of 32 on Sunday, which means Adam Biggers and John Gustin are going to talk about it during this episode of Sports in the Mitten.

Travis Trice, a senior, led the Spartans with a game-high 23 points. He scored 13 points during a five-minute, 30-second stretch in the first half but then fell victim to a 27-minute scoring drought. Adam and John talk about how Trice remedied the situation during the final minutes of the game.

Branden Dawson, also a senior, finished with four blocks—the second-most in a tournament game in program history. Adreian Payne had five vs. Delaware in 2014. Dawson’s presence in the middle and aggressive nature helped the Spartans reach their 13th Sweet 16 under coach Tom Izzo, a streak started in 1998.
